BUILT AROUND ONE JOB
Free meme generator features
Everything on this page supports the same focused workflow: open your source, make the edit you need, preview it and export a GIF. Your source is processed locally in your browser.
Create from a photo, clip or GIF
Use a JPG, PNG, WebP, browser-supported video or existing GIF. A sequence of matching-size images and the three built-in emoji backdrops also work as starting points.
The caption tools are included
Add top, bottom and extra captions, adjust their size and drag them into place. Free export does not remove the meme generator's text editing or live preview features.
Person-following on moving media
Attach text to a person in a GIF, video or image sequence and inspect the tracking. Free standard output includes this capability; it is not reserved for HD.
Your source stays on your device
The free meme generator processes source media locally in the browser. Standard downloads do not require you to upload the original image or clip to our server.
HD is optional, not a trial expiry
Continue making free standard GIFs whenever you like. If you need a larger result, sign in and use one credit for an HD export up to 720px.
THREE STEPS. ONE GREAT RESULT.
How to use this free meme generator.
Start with your own image or clip
Pick a photo, GIF or short video, or choose a built-in emoji backdrop. The current upload limit is 10 MB in total and moving media must be no longer than 10 seconds.
Write and position your caption
Add text at the top, bottom or both. The editor previews your changes before export and gives you a text-size slider and separate controls to position each caption.
Share a free standard GIF
Standard GIF export does not require an account, adds no watermark and is limited to 2 MB and up to 360 pixels on the longest side. If you need a larger output, HD export costs one credit.

SCENARIOS & SOLUTIONS
Get past the common free meme generator problems.
Is the free meme generator only a trial?
No. Standard GIF exports remain free, without a watermark or account. The paid option is HD output up to 720px, which uses one credit per export.
Can I download an MP4 or PNG instead?
The current editor exports GIF files. A still starting image is exported as a GIF too; PNG and MP4 export are not available yet.
Why did my free GIF become smaller or less smooth?
Standard output targets at most 2 MB and up to 360px. The encoder may reduce dimensions or frame rate, especially for detailed moving sources.
Where are my source files stored?
Source media is processed locally in your browser for GIF creation. A generated HD file may be retained in this browser's IndexedDB to recover an interrupted paid export.
